SoA's Con Journal
This was the Salad Time Soldiers' debut convention and we had a great time. After a long night of practicing the dance to Tsuki Iro no Syndicate behind Amanda's house in her driveway, we were a little zonked the next morning, but roused nice and early to head for Bowling Green State University. While Nikki and Amanda struggled with the Usagi wig, Elly, Rae, and I wandered the con, met cool people, and watched anime.
And the Usagi wig busted while they were trying to fix it. Rigging up a hoodie and some bows to disguise the wig explosion, they arrived just one number before we were to go on at the masquerade. Nikki wasn't feeling so well, so she didn't perform with us, but we captured the stage later that night and redid it with her for photos and video coverage. Doing the dance was a little interesting too because the only sound system they had was a lap top. While the judged tallied scores, there was a really fun half-time show. Either the cosplayers could participated in a "Whose Line is it Anyway?"-esque improv or be thrown into a crossover group with some other cosplayers and create a skit with about 10 minutes to prepare. We opted for Crossover Chaos and were thrown together with an Alucard. For our skit, we started by killing (Sailor Planet Attack) Professor Tomoe (aka Erik) in the audience and then tried to kill Alucard because he looked scary. We then discussed with him that fighting for good was a little dull, so we switched to the side of evil and went after the audience. Good fun.
Later that night, when the stage was empty again, we recorded our dance and goofed around some. We had Drive me the Mercury along, so I had good fun with karaoke, and then we all attempted to do La Soldier, having never rehearsed it together before. Messy but wonderfully fun. The next morning we had brunch at the college with a bunch of the cosplayers we'd met the day before. They had a chocolate fountain! Although a small con and the chaos we ran into, it was some of the most fun I've had at a convention.
